Dark ‘n Stormy

In Drink on July 16, 2011 at 5:11 pm

And what kind of pirate party would it have been without Dark ‘n Stormies for the grown-ups? When I was at the ACE in Palm Springs last summer, I had a great one made with Bundaberg Ginger Beer and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s Australian and super spicy, which is excellent in a dark and stormy. (Bonus: Bundaberg also offers a diet version that is pretty delish in a cocktail.)

Important to remember in a Dark ‘n Stormy, in addition to a spicy ginger beer, use a dark rum like Goslings Black Seal. And that’s it. Just two ingredients. Three, if you count a lime wedge swashbuckled with a sword.

Holiday Punch

I love this picture that my friend and celebrity photographer Alex Berliner took of yours truly with gorgeous friends Anna and Ariana at our holiday party a couple weeks ago. While Ariana is holding the goodness that is my sister’s masterful Triple Chocolate Cranberry Cookie, Anna and I are all about the punch, though it looks like her glass needs a little replenishing. I’ll tell you, the stuff disappears quickly. I blogged about the recipe earlier today on Herman Miller’s LIFEWORK blog in my weekly “Good Taste” feature, so head on over for the skinny. Go ahead, take a sip, it’s loaded with pomegranate antioxidants (she said by way of enticement). And white rum…and more rum…and Champagne, so while we can’t exactly call this a health beverage, we can call it the most festive and prettiest punch you’ll drink all year. Cheers!

Ho, Ho, Ho and a Bottle of Rum

Having grown up in Napa Valley, I—like most residents from the area—have an aversion to all things grape-themed, with one exception: grapevine wreaths. I love the organic simplicity of these gorgeous wreaths from Napa Valley Grapevine Wreath Company, hand-crafted from clippings from Cabernet Sauvignon vines. My mother hangs two enormous 36-inch wreaths from the lofts overlooking the living room each Christmas. This year, we’ve ordered an 18-inch wreath for our front door, a bargain at $22 especially considering that it will look gorgeous for years to come. Compare that with wreaths overwrought with pomegranates and faux berry sprigs at Restoration Hardware, starting at $69 and up, or live magnolia and boxwood wreaths that’ll last a few weeks at best, from Pottery Barn for $100. I’m pocketing the extra cash and spending it on a splurgy bottle of aged Ron Zacapa rum for the eggnog. It’s super smooth, and tastes like brown sugar, vanilla and spice…ho, ho, ho, and a bottle of rum!
