Everything’s Coming Up Roses (and Nasturtium, Poppies, Geraniums, etc)

Last night was warm and lit up by a beautiful new moon. My husband and I sat under our rose-scented pergola and sipped margaritas late into the night. It’s the first time the climbing roses have bloomed since we trained them up the pergola last summer. Just dreamy. Here’s a closer look at the blooms:

I was reminded of a comment recently from an LA expat and tropical plant enthusiast now living in Washington, D.C., who told me that people in Los Angeles need to stop growing roses. But I can’t. There are few things that make me as happy as these gorgeous spring blooms, especially on the rosebush I gave to Mr Foodinista for his birthday last year:

How is that flowers have such magical properties? I was feeling kinda blue this morning and so pulled over at the new Rolling Greens Nursery on Beverly (OMG – it’s AMAZING, much smaller than Culver City location but just incredible housewares, cement vessels and plants), and loaded up the trunk of my car:

And now I feel like this!

Built to Last

Check out this beautiful zinc French watering can (circa 1900) my mother got at St Helena Antiques for Mr Foodinista for Christmas this past year. Why a watering can, you ask? Last January for Mr Foodinista’s birthday, I got him a David Austin ‘Lady Emma Hamilton‘ bareroot rose, which probably sounds like an, um, unexpected gift for ones husband. But Mr Foodinista is one of the lucky few who can wear orange, and this particular rose is a gorgeous dark orange that fades to tangerine. (Last year in addition to the rose, I also treated he and two of his friends to dinner of flesh and carnage at his favorite restaurant, CUT, and the year before that it was Knicks tickets, so don’t send out the search and rescue teams just yet.) Because my husband is the greatest guy ever, he loves—or pretends to love—this rose and waters it regularly. It sits in a beautiful concrete pot on our front steps and is the first thing I see when I come up the drive. It makes me happy. So does knowing that we’ll have this watering can forever.

Herb Garden

We’ve been very, very busy the past few days and have torn up our entire backyard. We’ve planted flower beds, boxwoods and trees, put in gravel, sod, a fountain and brick patio—and over the next few days I’ll post pictures of the progress. But in the meantime, one of my favorite new additions: a redwood raised bed in which we’ve planted tomatoes and herbs. I got up early yesterday morning and got to the Santa Monica Farmers Market about 15 minutes before it opened, as Hayground was unloading their herbs. I loaded up on basil, purple basil, chives, Italian oregano, Italian parsley, Vietnamese cilantro, cilantro, red vein sorrel, marjoram, sage, lemon thyme, thyme, tomato plants, tarragon, mint and lemon verbena. Then the lovely Sess from Verdant Garden Design (verdantgardendesign@hotmail.com) built a beautiful 6 x 2 redwood raised bed for the herbs:

redwoodbedThis morning I went to Hollywood Farmers Market to pick up some chervil and shishito peppers to round things out, but neither of the herb guys will have either for at least another two weeks. So instead I got some gorgeous farm fresh eggs and made breakfast, and then sprinkled the eggshells over the herb garden to keep the snails out:
