The Dye Job

I’ve been blogging about our garage remodel over on Herman Miller’s LIFEWORK blog, and was waiting for pics of the new cement floor to go up over there before sharing some more here. I never thought I’d get so excited about CEMENT. But check this out. Above was a test patch on which we tried two different seams (we went with the smaller seam on the left) as well as a test run on stains (we used a combo of the two, heavier on the dark claret color). Using the smaller seam, we had it scored to look like a New York City sidewalk—my husband is a New Yorker and loved the nostalgia of what our contractor calls the “city seam.”

From there, the guys sprinkled stain on top and worked it in with a trowel, at the same time removing the rough edges around the seams. Working with stain is not something that’s recommended for DIY. As one person put it, it’s like a tattoo—you get one shot at getting it right. The results are GORGEOUS, adding subtle warmth and depth.
