Recently finished reading The Last Mrs. Astor, a biography which contains a fantastic photograph of Brooke Astor by her friend Cecil Beaton. My first dog’s name was Beaton after the photographer, whom my father knew and admired. (Actually, it was the name of our first Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The previous and very first childhood dog was called Dietrich after Marlene—a mean spirited dachsund that ate one from every pair of my mother’s shoes out of spite after having been left alone one afternoon for more time than the hound deemed appropriate.) My parents have two of Beaton’s photographs—a self portrait in his conservatory at Reddish House and another of Noël Coward in Beaton’s flat in Lausanne—that were gifts from the man himself. I love them. Here are some other favorites from Beaton.
